What's so different about HOTL3?
In other MUDs, you usually choose your class and from there, your path and your skills are determined. As HOTL3 is a skills-based mud, it is the other way round. Depending on the type and number of skills and spells you learn, an appropriate class will be assigned to you. For instance, if you learn mostly offensive and destructive spells, you would be a mage, but if you become equally skilled in healing later on, you might switch class to mage/cleric.

A class is more than just a name. In fact, being in a certain class usually grants you additional fighting or spell-casting abilities.Your class will improve with more expertise levels of the skills/spells in the class. For instance, a character that learns a warrior books and practices its skills might have a class of Trainee. As the character levels and learns more warrior books, his class might improve to Warrior. There are 15 'levels' of class improvements in the game. Certain players might even reach the level of superclass...

For a list of the classes in the MUD simply type help class1 all the way to class15. Take note that dual classes start from class4.

Like everyone else, you start your career as a Commoner. You either have not learnt any books, or have not learnt enough to be assigned a particular class. Being 'classless', adepts are not entitled to any bonuses. The moment you learn a book and practise the skills or spells in it, your class will change.
